Buster

Hi there! My name is Buster and I would everyone to know that old dogs actually can learn new tricks!   I went back to school and passed obedience class with my last owner, eh?

Mind you, that doesn't mean that I was always a model student!   It is even possible that I may have napped through a couple of classes .... apparently you humans take a dim view of dogs thinking they need to protect their space! Who knew?
The kind hearts here at the Provincial Animal Shelter will be the first to tell you that I am really good at listening to the staff and volunteers here.    Of course I do! Sheesh ... these folks work with dogs all the time and I can tell they expect me to listen!
That is why everyone here would like my new human to be dog experienced. It is just easier for me to be my best self if one of us knows what we are supposed to be doing, eh?
The good news is that I really am worth the extra effort. I still have enough get up and go to enjoy a nice walk ... but you wont' have to invest in good cross trainers to tire me out! At my age, I don't want to frolic with other dogs ... although I do love to snuggle up to any of the four footed ladies when I have a chance :)    Good grief ... I am even great with cats!
If you are looking for your very first dog, I probably won't be the boy for you. But if you are looking for someone who appreciates a good nights sleep as much as you do, we just might be kindred spirits!
I might not have graduated at the top of the class, but I do know that I will have more love than anyone could imagine for someone who would open their home and their heart to give me a second chance at love!

Sage

Well hello there! My name is Sage and I am really glad that everyone at East Coast German Shepherd Rescue understand that I have had quite enough trying to fend for myself. That is why they would like someone in my new home to be most of the time .... so that I never have to worry about that.

Besides ... I am such a snuggle bug that folks would really be missing out if they left me all by my lonesome! We beagles are famous for our friendly ways, eh?
The good news is that I love the company of other dogs, so if you cannot be home all the time, a canine buddy would suit me just fine :) Even better, I am good with cats! Best of all, in best beagle style I would make a great family dog because I am good with kids too!
I might not always be able avoid making the odd puddle if I am left home alone for too long, but I can promise that I would have more love than anyone could possibly imagine for the discerning kind heart who appreciates the company of 'older women'.

Rascal

Hey there .... my name is Rascal and anyone here at Homeward Bound City Pound can tell you that Amstafs put the capitol S in Sweet!

Gosh.... I figure I have pull out all the stops so that people will stop rushing past my pen to see the younger dogs here! If I put my best paw forward, surely someone will notice what a great pal that I could be right away!

If you are looking for a jogging partner, I might not be the lad for you. On the other hand, if you like to slow down and smell the roses when you go for a stroll around the neighbourhood, I just might be the buddy you have been looking for!

But ...there are a lot of things I can do, eh? I'd be very good at going for car rides and wouldn't even have to call shotgun if I could nap in the back seat. If you need to concentrate on work you are doing at home, I promise I won't need to keep jumping up to see what you are doing!

I promise to be pleased to see you whenever you come home .... without singing my heart out while you are gone. I can guarantee that I will always be ready to help you watch your favourite show. I will never question your taste in movies or criticize your wardrobe.

I might not be able to keep up with the youngsters, but I can promise that I will never run out of love for someone who opens their home and their heart to a sweet and seasoned fellow like me.

Kallie

Hi there ... my name is Kallie and the kind folks here at SHAID wish that people understood that good things can come in small packages. Mind you, its hard for visitors to see that when they hurry past my cage on their way to meet the younger cats.

My friend Sawyer seems to think that some folks are likely put off because we both have to have Gastro food! She is always saying that not everyone understands that two cats are actually easier than one ... especially when they are good friend like we are.

Gosh .. we would be just perfect for anyone with a busy life! No need to worry about us ... we would be good company for each other whenever the humans in the house were out and about!

I might not be the biggest girl on the block, but I would have more love than you could possibly imagine for the kind soul who would be willing to open their home and their heart to a gentle pair of Golden Girls like us.

Zed

Hmmmph! My name is Zed and I wish with all my heart that people visiting SHAID would understand that an eight year old cat is just starting to hit his or her stride! Gee whiz ... when a well cared for cat can live to be twenty, eight is really only middle aged, eh?

Eight is old enough to sleep through the night but still young enough to enjoy a good round of laser tag! At eight, cats can tell the difference between a catnip mouse tied to a door handle and the strings on your pyjamas!

Best of all, eight is still young enough to have enthusiasm but old enough to 'know better'!

I might not really be an old fellow, but I can promise you that I will be wise enough to appreciate a second chance at love! I really will have more love than anyone can possibly imagine for that special someone who can see beyond the candles on my birthday cake to the kindred spirit that I really am!

Sawyer

Oh hello there! My name is Sawyer and I've just been watching everyone rush past my cage here at SHAID... sigh. Everyone is in such a big rush to meet the younger cats that nobody has even noticed how well behaved and gentle I am!

It probably doesn't help that I can't eat just any old kind of cat chow! People hear that I have to eat Gastro food and panic before they can realize that one little cat really doesn't eat a whole lot of food! Gee whiz ... its not like I'm a Labrador Retriever or a Saint Bernard, eh?

If someone would just slow down for a minute, I could show them what lovely manners I have! I already know that it is only polite to wash my paws after using the litter box. I understand that you are not really inviting me to play a game when you are lacing up your boots!

Even better, I came here with my best friend, Kallie, and we are living proof that the best entertainment for a cat is another cat!   We would be perfect for anyone who leads a busy life ... because we would be good company for each other whenever you have to be out and about.

Best of all, I have already learned that you don't really appreciate cats up on the counter .... at least when you are watching .... heh heh heh!

I might not be able to find the magic words to slow down the rush past my cage, but even so I can promise that I will have more love than anyone could possibly imagine for the discerning kind heart who appreciates the kindred spirit just waiting to be discovered!

Spike

Hey there ... my name is Spike and I am living proof that it is possible to adopt a declawed cat from rescue! Not that the kind hearts here at SHAID actually approve of doing that to a cat ... but even declawed cats can become homeless, eh?

The good news is that I am a Tabby Cat and we Tabbies have a very well deserved reputation for friendliness. We will run to the door to meet you and follow you around like puppies!

Even better, I am big enough to keep your whole lap warm when we are curled up together for some quality couch potato time.

Best of all of course is that I am old enough and wise enough to appreciate the value of a second chance ... so I really will have more love than anyone can possibly imagine for the kind heart who appreciates a good night's sleep as much as they do!

Dee Dee

Well hello there ... my name is DeeDee and everyone here at SHAID calls me the Queen of the Castle!

Don't get me wrong ... everyone is very kind here but I would willingly abdicate my throne and settle for the simple life of sleeping in a sunny windowsill of my own! Can you think of a better way to decorate your front room window?

Even better, I would be a big help keeping your feet warm at night! I like a good nights sleep every bit as much as you do and already understand that if your feet move at night in your sleep that is not an invitation to pounce!

Best of all of course is that I would have more love than anyone could possibly imagine for someone who would understand that even a castle without a cat is really only a house!

Storm

Hey there ... my name is Storm and you will have to speak up, because I am getting a little hard of hearing! I was having a really hard time until a kind heart found me wandering about on my own and brought me to the Yarmouth SPCA.

I didn't do at all well trying to look after myself! I was so dirty and so hungry and just plain discouraged when I first came here to the shelter. As a matter of fact, everyone was surprised to see how handsome I was once I was bathed and brushed and had a full belly again!

Sheesh .. I do not even think that I am old enough to hear the kind of things that were said about what sort of person would honestly expect an older gentledog to take care of himself!

After everything that I have been though, the Yarmouth SPCA would like everyone in my new home to be old enough to respect that I am still catching up on my naps!

It is wonderful to be warm! It is great to not to have to worry about where my next meal is coming from! But even though everyone here is very kind, I would love to have one of those genuine Forever Homes that everyone keeps talking about here.

I don't know if I am supposed to spill the beans, but here at the Yarmouth SPCA Shelter they pull out all the stops for senior pets and waive our adoption fees!

I might not have been able to manage on my own, but I can promise that I will have more love than anyone can possibly imagine for someone who appreciates the Zen of a seasoned fellow like me.

Molly

Well hello there! My name is Molly and I am no stranger to domestic bliss! I have been well loved and well cared for by the same sweet couple every day of my life!

Sadly, now they have to move to something called 'The Home" ... which unlike this happy place will not allow me to come along ...sigh

The good news is that PET Projects are helping my people advertise so that I will have a second chance to be somebody's sweetheart!

Now you would think that people would be lining up at the door to adopt me, but sadly not everyone understands that a well cared for little lady like myself is really only middle aged at ten!

Sheesh .. are those narrow minds ever missing out! I am well behaved and well socialized! I am friendly and just love meeting people! And I don't mean to brag, but I have been told that I have lovely leash manners!

I might not be able to follow my family when they move, but I can promise that I will have more love than anyone can imagine for someone who understands how much I still have to offer.

Nakita

Well hello there ..... my name is Nakita and the only thing I would rather do than play with my ball is curl up on the couch and snuggle with you! I bring ten years of experience to the table and that means that I already understand what a lovely thing it is to have somebody to love!

What really impresses my foster Mum with Animal Rescue Coalitions is how well behaved I am when she has to leave me home by myself. She says that if the only thing I do is chew on the occasional sock that really is no big deal at all. Gosh she even thanked me for helping her to be a better housekeeper, eh?

I don't mean to brag, but you will go a long way before you meet a gentler girl than me! You could lay on top of me .. or even play with my feet .. and that would be fine with me. The great thing about being my age is that I really am more experienced at love, eh?

If you are thinking of taking up dog sledding I won't be the girl for you! But if you are looking for someone who is well socialized enough to go anywhere ... for someone who will always have sweet kisses for you ... and for someone to spend lazy Sunday afternoons with ... then we could just be a Happy Tail waiting to happen!

I might not be much of an athlete, but I can promise that I would have medal winning serving of love for someone who opened their heart and their home to a settled and snuggly sweetheart like me.

Meeko

Hi there! My name is Meeko and my foster Mum here at Lab Rescue Nova Scotia will be the first to tell you that I am like a poster boy for all the best bits about an experienced Lab! I am easy going and friendly! I just love the company of other dogs!

Sheesh ... eight years old does not mean over the hill, eh? If I have a few little lumps and bumps, that is easily offset by the fact that the only reason you will need a mop when I am around is for those darned muddy paw prints!

After all, how am I ever going to have a chance to demonstrate my perfect recall if we just hang out on the couch all day? My foster Mum is very impressed .... apparently none of the younger models come with that very convenient option, eh?

I am a boy with a good nose, and cannot seem to help myself when it comes to Kleenex! Hey ... its a lot cheaper than having a thing for shoes, eh?

I might not be able to count the eight candles on my birthday cake, but I can promise that I really will have more love than anyone can possibly imagine for someone who would open their home and their heart to a fun loving fellow like me!

Wink

Hey there ... my name is Wink and if I could just figure out how to use the darned digital camera, I would make a video to show you how spry an eleven year old cat can be!  Sheesh ... people see eleven candles on my birthday cake and figure that I must one of those old geezers who sails from power nap to power nap all day long!
The truth is that I am in excellent health and just love to play!     Gosh .. I don't mean to brag, but the kind folks here at the LA Shelter say that I am every bit as active as any of the younger cats!
Even better, I am really well socialized and get along with pets of all shapes and sizes.
Best of all of course is that I am really only middle aged and so I actually have years and years of love to offer!
I might be a success as a photographer, but I can promise that I will have more love than anyone can possibly imagine for someone wise enough to understand just how much love and companionship that I still have to offer!

Kat

Ummm ... my name is Kat and I really do wish I was brave enough to come out and meet you!    Gosh ... all the kind folks here at the Lillian Albon Shelter keep trying to tell me that if I just give new people half a chance that they really aren't as scary as I think!
I am afraid that I make a very poor social butterfly.  It isn't that I don't like people!   It is simply that I haven't had a whole lot of practice meeting new people!
Don't get me wrong!   Everyone here at the shelter has been very kind.  I just don't understand why I couldn't stay with my human!  Gosh ... if she went to a a Better Place you would think she would have taken me along, eh?
I am not at all good at wearing my heart on my sleeve ... but the good news is that I am only seven or eight!  That means that I am really only middle aged and have years of love left to offer!
I might need some help coming out of my shell, but I can promise you that I would have more love than anyone could imagine for someone patient enough to understand that the best things in life are worth working for!

Victoria

Well hello there ... my name is Victoria, and I am still thanking my lucky stars.   I don't remember all the details, but apparently I was on my way to join the angels when a kind soul found me and brought me to the Lunenburg SPCA.
I did have a home once ... and somebody to love.    To be perfectly honest, I had no idea that I would wind up homeless and out on the street in my old age.
Lucky me to have a second chance at love, hmm?
If you are looking for someone who still has twenty years of love left to offer then I probably won't be the girl for you.  On the other hand ... if you are looking for a gentle and quiet companion who won't rearrange your desk, then we might just be kindred spirits.
I might not be the biggest girl on the block, but I can promise that I will have more love than anyone can possibly imagine for someone kind enough to open their home and their heart to a little old lady like me.

Welcome

Its really tough to be a homeless pet. Its even harder for senior pets. Adopters often overlook lovely seniors because of some sad misconceptions:
  • Seniors will have more health issues. The great thing about adopting a pet from rescue is that known health issues are never kept hidden. Age is never a guarantee as I have lost younger pets to cancer while my seniors have surprised us all.
  • Only puppies and kittens can bond to their adopter. Boy that's a real misconception because with older comes the wiser bits. Seniors are smart enough to get what a blessing a second chance is.
  • You can't teach an old dog new tricks. Actually, older pets are more settled and focus much better for learning
  • Seniors won't live as long. Gosh.... these days with good food and living in a warm dry home, pets of all types live ever so much longer

There are LOTS of really good reasons to adopt senior pets at http://www.nshomelesspets.com/seniorpet.htm. Anyone wise enough to understand the Zen of older pets can find a fairly complete listing there too.
